Medicinal Cannabis

Medicinal Cannabis

Medicinal Cannabis is different to that of black-market cannabis as it is produced in a regulated environment.

The quality of the product is required to comply with the high Australian Therapeutic Goods Standards known as TG0 93.

The medicinal cannabis extracted from the cannabis plant frequently involves isolating useful Cannabinoids and refining the process to minimize the risk of harm. Medicinal Cannabis contains different levels and different types of Cannabinoids dependent on which medical condition they are used for.

Dr Thinn’s authorization

Dr Wai Thinn has been practicing in Cairns for 6 years, after beginning her GP training at James Cook University. Dr Thinn is a registered general practitioner with the TGA, and is trained to integrate health practices with adjunct plant-based medication prescribing to assist you in alleviating symptoms and improving treatment outcomes.

To become an authorized prescriber the medical practitioner must:

  • Have appropriate training and expertise
  • Be best able to assess the patient's needs
  • Be able to monitor the outcome of the therapy

To find out more about the TGA, visit below:

Australia Therapeutic Goods Administration (TGA)

What You’ll Need

For your initial assessment with Dr Thinn, please bring a current health summary and letter from your usual GP with:

  • Diagnoses of one of the following conditions
  • information regarding previous trials of conventional medicine or non-medicinal measures that you have already tried but have failed or were discontinued due to intolerable side effects.
  • Current medications list

It is a requirement for TGA approval that there is some preclinical or clinical evidence that medical cannabis or CBD oil will benefit your condition or reduce symptoms.

DVA Patients (Gold Card Holders Only)

DVA will fund medicinal cannabis in line with their framework, and is decided on a case by case basis. Both consultations and scripts can be covered by the DVA, as long as the criteria is met and funding is pre-approved.

We require a Health Summary from your GP as well as evidence of your covered Health Conditions and information from your GP regarding the previous evidence-based standard treatments for your condition, and why they may have failed.

For further information, please contact DVA: Medicinal cannabis | Department of Veterans' Affairs (dva.gov.au)

Dr Thinn can currently only provide treatment for Tier 1 applications (max 2 products, THC no more than 40mg a day)

Initial Medicinal Cannabis Assessment – 30 Minutes – will be allocated for Dr Thinn to discuss the requirements with you and to begin the application process with DVA and await approval. Scripts will not be able to be given until your follow up appointment appointment after getting DVA Approval.
